Proboscis Largest Habitat, in the Middle Barito River

Proboscis is the mascot of South Kalimantan, especially Banjarmasin who became its capital. You can see their native habitat in Kaget Island who are in the midst of Barito River.

This is a unique species of monkeys. Proboscis has a long nose and a flushed face. There is a reason this one species of monkeys used as the mascot of South Kalimantan in particular Banjarmasin city. One is, because their habitat is located in the administrative area.


Kaget island is the land that was in the middle of the River Barito. This island has been designated as a nature reserve since 1976. In addition to the original habitat proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), the island is also enlivened by long-tailed monkeys and several species of birds.

Barito itself is one of the longest river in Borneo. Length not less than 900 kilometers, or roughly along the island of Java! Well, Kaget Island located 12 kilometers from the headwaters of the Barito. The island is included in the administrative district Tabunganen.

Because pristine condition, Kaget Island much in demand by the traveler and adventurer. Its main activity is to see the direct daily activities of the proboscis monkeys and long-tailed monkeys.

The best time to visit is at 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PST, when they're out to find food. Bekantan favorite foods are fruits, especially the fruit of  rambai tree is widely grown in Kaget Island.


To reach this place, from Banjarmasin city, you can use a wooden boat (with approximately 1.5 hour trip) or speedboat (about 1 hour trip) to arrive on the island.

Arriving in Kaget Island, do not be surprised if proboscis monkey welcome you from the trees!
